Def: a crime in which an impostor obtains key pieces of personal identifying information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers and uses them for their own personal gain
Example: Identity theft is categorized in two ways: true name and account takeover.
Identity theft can start with lost or stolen wallets, stolen mail, a data breach, computer virus, “phishing” scams, or paper documents thrown out (dumpster diving).

Identity theft is sometimes referred to as "iJacking."
Currently there is no standard definition of identity theft in the world. The term is often used interchangeably with the terms ‘identity fraud’ and ‘identity crime’ to cover a broad range of conduct involving the unauthorised or improper use of personal identification information.
