Def: occurs when a false identity or someone else’s identity details are used to support unlawful activity, or when someone avoids obligation/liability by falsely claiming that he/she was the victim of identity fraud.
Example: Identity fraud is the act of using a stolen identity to obtain goods or services by deception. Identity fraud is a synonym of unlawful identity change.
 
Usage note  
The term is often used interchangeably with the terms ‘identity crime’ and ‘identity theft’ to cover a broad range of conduct involving the unauthorised or improper use of personal identification information.
