Def: a person who starts an action against someone in a civil court
Example: The plaintiff seeks a legal remedy, and if successful, the court will issue judgment in favor of the plaintiff and make the appropriate court order.
 
Usage note  
In England and Wales 'plaintiff' has not been used since 1999, 'claimant' has replaced it. In Scottish law, 'plaintiff' is referred to as 'pursuer'. In the United States, as well as in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the legal term 'plaintiff' is still in use.
